CFA Seattle participates in global competition

First Annual Pacific Northwest Investment Research Challenge to Focus on Fisher Communications

Would-be investment analysts from local universities compete to represent Seattle in worldwide competition

CFA Society of Seattle announced that Seattle-based Fisher Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq GM:FSCI) is the subject company for the First Annual Pacific Northwest Investment Research Challenge (PNIRC).  Fisher’s CEO Colleen B. Brown and CFO Joseph L. Lovejoy, CFA delivered a presentation on their company to the student teams on November 9, 2009.

The PNIRC, as part of the CFA Institute Global Investment Research Challenge, is an eight-month real-world educational initiative in which leading industry professionals teach business and finance students how to research and report on a publicly traded company. It consists of training in research and report writing, analysis of a public company, mentoring by a professional research analyst, assessment of written reports, and presentation of research to a high-profile panel of investment experts.  The CFA Society of Seattle introduced the Challenge as a means to promote best practices in research among the next generation of investment analysts.

Participating universities in this year’s challenge are Pacific Lutheran University, Seattle University, University of Puget Sound, University of Washington, Bothell, University of Washington, Seattle, Western Washington University, and Washington State University.

The winning team will be selected based on the combined scores for a written report and presentation, and will advance to compete for the Americas Regional Investment Research Challenge title on March 17, 2010 in New York.  The Global Finale will be held on April 16, 2010 in Hong Kong where the regional champions from Asia Pacific, Americas, EMEA and New York will vie for the Global Investment Research Challenge title.

Fisher Communications, Inc. is a Seattle-based communications company that owns and operates television and radio stations in the Western United States. The company also owns and operates online media properties, real estate, and a satellite and fiber transmission provider.

Visit the Pacific Northwest Investment Research Challenge page for more information.

Tune In Today
CFA Seattle is On The Air

The message is out, and it's lound and clear: ethics, tenacity, rigor, analytics!

You may have heard our underwriting spots on the local NPR affiliates over the last week. As part of a conjunctive effort with CFA Institute to reach private wealth investors, acquainting them with the benefits of choosing a CFA Charterholder, your local society has launched a radio campaign to motivate investors to consider working with a CFA member.

A meticulous amount of research and toil went into formulating and executing this campaign, produced by a hard-working team of volunteers under the leadership of CFA Seattle member Martha Freitag, and included the help of the CFA Institute advertising staff. A sincere thank you to member Martha Freitag and her working group, including Susan Moore and Jeff Lippens.

The radio campaign will air daily and at varying times throughout the day until the end of June.

Approximate air times are 7 a.m., 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on KUOW (94.9 FM) and KPLU (88.5 FM), but you may listen to the message right now by clicking here.

If you have not already done so, please take a moment to add your name to the publicly searchable database of CFA Seattle members.

Your feedback is always welcome at info@cfaseattle.org.

2007 Homeless Shelter Dinner
What an amazing event again this year! Participation by CFA Society members and friends was outstanding. We had about 40 who contributed – either by cooking, bringing food, serving, donating supplies, or making cash donations to the shelter. On Sunday evening, January 28th, we served over 130 people at the Family & Adult Service Center. Our dinner was greatly appreciated.

Special thanks – well, to everyone, really. Once again, Liza outdid herself in organizing the event. Patrick, Hoon Kim, Andrea, Steve Cole, Nick Zeppa, Heidi Davis – wonderful servers!

It was also a pleasure for people in our group to get to meet Lenora (Volunteer Coordinator) and Pauline – (Program Director) at the Family & Adult Service Center. What a fine group of people providing such important services in our community.

Once again, thanks to everyone who helped out. I know you brought nourishment and light into a lot of people’s lives.
